What are Parabens?
Parabens are the most widely used preservative in cosmetics. They are an inexpensive way to prolong product shelf life and to drive product into your body.
Methylparaben, Popylparaben, Germaben are among the most common; look for anything with “paraben”in the wording and avoid it. (A little known but widely used alternative name is Alkyl parahydroxy benzoates.)
Parabens can act as endocrine disrupters (aka interfere with your hormones) mimicking estrogen and testosterone hormone levels in your body. Studies attribute their presence to certain cancers, early onset of puberty, lowering of testosterone levels (aka lower libido, weight gain, depression, etc) and some skin irritations such as eczema, acne, and inflamed skin.
Where are Parabens Found?
Everywhere! Parabens are inexpensive and effective making them a popular choice for many brands. Parabens have been used widely in the cosmetics industry since the 1920s. Found in makeup, facial products, body creams, vitamins, protein powders and more. BUT wait, they are also in your personal hygiene products, such as deodorants, shampoos, conditioners and they are even in your foods.
Alternative words to live by:
Phenoxyethanol, Salicylic Acid, Plant extracts such as rosemary and Scorbic Acid, a plant-derived alternatives to parabens.
